FAQs

Why is Trex composite decking better than using hardwood decking?

Trex decking offers a superior performance and durability that you cannot get from timber decking. Unlike timber, Trex decking never needs to be stained, oiled or painted. It will not warp, rot, splinter and is also resistant to termites. Being made from 95% recycled materials makes it an environmentally friendly choice.

What materials are used in the manufacturing of the Trex decking product?

Trex decking made from 95% recycled materials, including reclaimed timber and sawdust as well as plastic from many common household items. These plastic items include but does not limit to, the plastic overwrap on packaging for paper towels and toilet paper, dry cleaner bags, newspaper bags, grocery and shopping bags. Annually, Trex salvages and keeps more than 400 million pounds of plastic and wood scrap out of landfills. This makes Trex ones of the largest plastic film recyclers in the USA. In fact, the average 500 square foot of composite Trex decking contains 140,000 recycled plastic bags.

Beyond using recycled materials, what other environmentally friendly practices does Trex employ?

The Trex manufacturing process recycles factory runoff and refuse back into the manufacturing line. Within the Trex plant the trailers that carry product run on vegetable oil hydraulics.  Due to these environmentally friendly practises, Trex is a member of the U.S Green Building Council (USGBC). The Trex products contribute to a buildings Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) points.

Why is Trex more expensive than timber decking, being that it is made of recycled materials?

While most of the raw materials used in making Trex are recycled, these materials are carefully processed to ensure the highest level of quality and performance. The end result is decking that performs better than timber, lowering your cost over time through less maintenance.

What is the lifetime value of Trex decking?

Initially, Trex decking will cost more when compared to timber decking. However, with Trex you will never have to sand, paint or stain over the life of the deck.  These reduced costs in maintenance add up to a far greater value than the cost of a timber deck. You will be able to spend quality time enjoying your deck rather than working on it.

Is Trex decking no maintenance?

Trex decking requires far lower maintenance than a traditional timber deck but it requires some maintenance to keep it looking good throughout the years, much like washing your car.

For the high-performance decking Trex Transcend®,it requires less work. A simple soap and water cleaning is all that is necessary to maintain the beauty of the products. However, this range can be pressure washed as well. You can only use a fan tip and up to a 3100 psi pressure washer to remove dirt and debris. The fan tip should not be any closer than 20.5cm away from the protective shell during use.

***Use of a pressure washer greater than 3100 psi could damage the boards and void the warranty

Does the Trex Transcend® have a fire rating?

Yes, the Trex Transcend® range has been tested in accordance with Australian Standard AS 1530.8.1-2007. Product test results are:

Trex Transcend® Decking Boards meet a BAL 19 & 29
